This
project encompasses approximately 207,000 square feet
and includes a 21,000 square foot lobby/atrium area
that is the focal point of the facility and serves as
the hospitals new “grand” entrance. The
open balcony atrium extends five stories above the lobby
floor and is entirely capped with a glass skylight having
an exposed structure. Cosentini designed the MEP/FP
systems that serve this lobby to be aesthetically integrated
into the building’s architecture – concealing
them from public view without compromising their practicality
in terms of function and maintenance. The atrium lighting
fixtures are located at an easily accessible wall mounted
location (for servicing) and will utilize suspended
reflectors, suspended from the skylight structure, to
direct the light patterns where needed. The HVAC systems
that serve the atrium utilize a tiered distribution,
where supply air is introduced at each of the open balcony
levels and returned at the skylight area above. A smoke
purge system, in excess of 300,000 cfm, was incorporated
into the architectural design of the lobby and atrium
areas. The project also entailed the renovation and
reconfiguration of an existing 55,000 square foot patient
unit to a new critical care unit, as well as infrastructure
upgrades. The infrastructure upgrade project included
the refurbishment of a 9000-ton chiller plant (including
new chillers, pumps, etc.), new air handling units and
air distribution systems and the addition of a campus
chilled water distribution system.
