This
287,000 square foot laboratory facility contains research
and instructional laboratories, animal housing and teaching
hospital space for the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Additional work included a new 38,000 square foot project
containing classrooms and a library; and various renovations
to areas that were affected by this new construction.
The total area of new construction, including general
circulation and mechanical spaces, is approximately
325,000 square feet. The research portion of the College
of Veterinary Medicine project consists of a three-story
block of laboratories and offices located above a first
floor base containing the teaching hospital. A
portion of the first floor west of the College entrance
and corridor also contains research space, common support
(glass wash) and an instructional laboratory. The basement
level contains laboratory animal housing and an electron
microscopy suite. The laboratory animal holding rooms
use a dirty/clean circulation system and were designed
for a biocontainment level of BL-2 with an expandable
portion of the facility designed for BL-3 containment.
A specialized ventilation system including laminary
flow panels was required for the facility holding exotic
birds. Energy conservation is achieved through an air
side economizer cycle in the main air handling units,
and a run around heat recovery system within the main
laboratory exhaust system. Engineering work also included
a complete reverse osmosis pure water system of piping
and equipment that produces high quality water of 10
megohm resistivity corresponding to CAP type 1 specifications.
