Located
in the center of Rhode Island ’s historic capital
city, the Providence Place mall encompasses 1.4 million
square feet and cost an estimated $430 million to construct.
The mall, which was developed by Commonwealth Development
Group, was designed to replicate a city block with multiple,
varying facades, as well as numerous street-side entrances,
restaurants and shops. Pedestrians can access one section
of the mall from another by means of an impressive glass-enclosed
winter garden that serves as a bridge over the river.
Program areas include a 425,000 square foot mall and
125,000 square feet of additional street level retail,
a multi-screen movie theater, three anchor stores (Macy’s,
Filene’s, Lord & Taylor), a food court and
structured parking for 5,000 cars. Providence Place
was constructed over existing AMTRAK train tracks.
